In the early days, Radio Comedy,
like most other programmes, was broadcast live from the studio. Anything
that was not recorded was lost for ever.
Sadly a tremendous amount of
material falls into this category. Later as recording methods improved and
became more economical, it became usual to record programmes and, eventually
almost every comedy programme was pre-recorded.
From this one might imagine that
every episode of every series is safely stored away down in the vaults of
Broadcasting House. However this is not the case. Tapes were re-cycled
and thrown away on a wholesale basis.
The good news, however, is that a
number of Comedy Series do in fact still exist in their entirety. These are
listed below in four columns. Namely: Title, Number of Programmes, Date of
First Episode and Radio Station.
