The Buxton Years
The format of the lectures is always much the same.  Recordings are played of famous (and sometimes not so famous artistes). Sometimes the audience is asked to guess who is singing. As all the recordings are of a non-commercial nature, this is not always as easy as it might be.

Among the rare items played during this entertainment were the following: Iolanthe's plea to the Lord Chancellor as performed by Joyce Wright. Jeffrey Skitch singing "Our Great Mikado..." and "None Shall Part Us" with Mary Sansom as Phyllis. We also heard Joyce Wright as Petti-Sing.

More unusual recordings were aired again this year. The audience were treated to "When I went to the bar" sung by James Conroy-Ward. "There was a time" sung by Jennifer Toye and John Fryatt. And an extract from "The Bartered Bride" with Thomas Round. We also heard Peter Pratt in a radio play with Dandy Nichols. This was entitled "A Dead Liberty" and was transmitted on the 15 October 1964.

For a change this year we had interludes. These consisted on little stories of amusing events that had happened to D'Oyly Carte singers at various times. There was, for example, the time Donald Adams got stuck on the train. Or the famous meeting on the Golf Course between Tom Round and his former RAF colleague. Musical items were still played and Arthur Richards singing "There Lived a King" was one of them. The "Take It From Here" London Transport parody was another. This was the first version and not the 1957 re-make.

Hopefully there is no sign of us running out of material. As a tribute to the late Kenneth Sandford, we listened to him singing the curate's song from The Sorcerer - well both his songs actually. The Captain's two numbers from HMS Pinafore and the Pirate King's song, We also heard Susan Jackson singing "I Cannot tell what This Love may be". A short extract from the 1958 Sadlers Wells "The Merry Widow" was also played

30 July 2007

Items played in this year's programme included:The famous duet from Act 1 of La Traviata as sung by Heather Harper and Thomas Round. It was from a recording of "Coronation Street" (dated 12 January 2007) and was played as background music by Roy the owner of the cafe. Thomas Round was my Guest of Honour and joined in quite a bit. Accordingly it seemed only fair to play the duet again properly as it was heard on television on 10 October 1955. A good selection of Countes Maritza was also played.

What I did not know was that I had an artist in my audience. Her name, taken from the signature on the picture, is Wendy Gooch.  Through the internet, I would like publicly to thank her both for the magnificent drawing and for coming to support Programme 8 of "Songs of Famous Savoyards".  Among the famous Savoyards heard this year were Peggy Ann Jones, Thomas Round, John Ayldon, Kenneth Sandford, Judi Merri, John Reed and others.

A lot of people don't realise what an important part the BBC magazine "Radio Times" plays during the preparation of one of my programmes.  It plays an equally important part in providing me with information about other transmissions that are not Gilbert and Sullivan based. For the last fifty years I have been trying to put together a complete run of the magazine.  Last March I achieved my ambition.  I obtained the sixteen years that I still needed and all in bound volumes too ! Several old programmes from the pages of this wonderful paper were featured in Programme 9.
